It's Cruel And Needless | Quote: | Animal welfare campaigners are protesting at the "needless slaughter" of hundreds of thousands of seals as the hunting season starts in Canada.
The annual seal cull in the southern Gulf of St Lawrence has begun with up to 270,000 animals facing slaughter.
Thousands of seals have already died as a result of the worst ice conditions in the area for decades.
Many are cubs which cannot swim in the first weeks of life and need solid ice to survive.
A large number of seals have drowned because much of the ice has broken.
Environmentalists blame global warming for the ice deteriorating.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (Ifaw) says the cull, in which seals are clubbed to death, is "unacceptably cruel and unnecessary".
The commercial hunt targets seal pups, with the most animals slaughtered less than three months old.
Fishermen can kill pups as soon as they begin to molt their white coats, often at just 12 days old.
An Ifaw spokesman said: "With the considerable lack of ice this year, it is likely that we will see lots of seals shot by fishermen in open water.
"Tragically those that are not killed outright often slip away in the water and experience a slow, lingering death."
Ifaw is urging governments and the European Parliament to close down markets for seal products. |
