Hunt for Turkey collapse victims | Quote: | A multi-storey building in Istanbul has collapsed and there are fears that a number of people may have been trapped.
Turkish TV channel NTV showed rescue workers searching for survivors and people, some carrying babies, being evacuated from nearby buildings.
There is no word yet on casualties and it is not known how many people were inside the building when it collapsed.
The cause of the collapse, which occurred in a residential part of the city, is not yet known.
Most people had been evacuated from the building, Istanbul's governor Muammer Guler said.
"Most of the poeple left the building when they heard cracking sounds, but a few people re-entered to get their things," Mr Guler told TV reporters.
Istanbul's mayor, Kadir Topbas, told the Associated Press news agency the building collapsed when workers were trying to demolish an adjacent building.
In February this year one woman died when a building collapsed in Istanbul.
