A search is being carried out for a three-year-old from Britain who may have been abducted while on holiday with her family in Portugal.

Madeleine McCann's parents, from Leicestershire, were at a restaurant near the Mark Warner Ocean Summer Club in Praia da Luz when she went missing.

Kate and Gerry McCann returned at about 2145 GMT to find an empty bed and the apartment door and window wide open.

The apartment has been cordoned off and local people are helping with a search.

'Devoted family'

Gill Renwick, a friend of the family, said Madeleine's parents - both doctors - had been having a meal in a tapas restaurant a few hundred yards from the apartment and had been checking on the little girl and her younger sibling twins every half hour.

"They're a devoted family and love their children to bits. They live for their children."

Madeleine was reported missing at about 2200 BST on Thursday and tourists joined the police in an all-night search.

Her aunt Trish Cameron, who lives in Glasgow, said she felt certain her niece had been abducted.

"They last checked at half past nine and they were all sound asleep, sleeping, windows shut, shutters shut.

"Kate went back at 10 o'clock to check. The front door was lying open, the window had been tampered with, the shutters had been jemmied open or whatever you call it and Madeleine was missing...

"She's an absolutely beautiful, wee blonde girl, blue-green eyes - one distinguishing feature is that one of her pupils runs into the iris of her right eyes. She's an absolutely gorgeous wee girl."

She added: "We feel that what's been going on in Portugal has been ineffectual.

"My brother and sister-in-law are absolutely distraught."

But the manager of the Mark Warner resort in Portugal, John Hill, said about 60 staff and guests at the complex had searched until 0430 GMT while police notified border police, Spanish police and airports.

'Sensitive case'

"As you can imagine Madeleine's parents are distraught and not doing very well at all," he said.

"It's still questionable as to whether it's abduction," he said.

"We are hoping that Madeleine is found as soon as possible and safe and well."

The holiday firm has offered to fly other family members out to the resort.

A spokeswoman from the Portuguese police said they were being careful with the information being released.

"It is a sensitive case, it involves a child and we cannot give more information for now."

The British Embassy confirmed it had been informed about the toddler's disappearance.

The family was on holiday with a group of nine adults and eight children.

I can't imagine what the parents are going through. My heart goes out to them, and I hope they find her safe and well.

I heard about this yesterday, and have been watching it on the news this morning as well, and she still hasn't been found.

I cannot even begin to understand the torment that her parents must be feeling right now. It's so awful and my heart goes out to them, and the rest of the family.

Portuguese police are set to continue their search for a three-year-old British girl believed to have been abducted from a holiday apartment.

Madeleine McCann, from Leicestershire, went missing on Thursday night from the Mark Warner resort in Praia da Luz.

Police have widened their search to a radius of seven miles around the complex, taking in wells and forests.

On Sunday Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry prayed for her safe return at a church service.

The toddler was taken from her bed while her parents were eating at a nearby restaurant and regularly checking on her and their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie.

Police have failed to report any progress in their investigation since they said on Saturday they thought Madeleine had been abducted but was alive.

On Saturday they were stopping cars on roads and searching abandoned homes and scrubland in the surrounding Algarve countryside.

Airports across the country are on alert and police believe the toddler is still in Portugal.

They have been showing locals what one called "a vague sketch" of a suspect.

On Sunday Mr and Mrs McCann attended a Catholic church service to pray for their daughter's safe return.

Tourists and expatriates also attended an Anglican service at Praia da Luz, and prayers were said at the church in the family's home village of Rothley.

Speaking after the Mass, Mr McCann told reporters: "We continue to hope for the best possible outcome from this for us and for Madeleine."

A tearful Kate McCann said: "Gerry and I would just like to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to everybody, but particularly the local community here, who have offered so much support.

"We couldn't have asked for more. I just wanted to say thank you. Please continue to pray for Madeleine."

Mrs McCann found the outside shutter and window to Madeleine's room had been opened and her daughter missing shortly before 2200 local time on Thursday

I really hope they find her.

A British man questioned over the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal is being treated as a suspect.

He is believed to be Robert Murat, who shares a villa with his mother Jenny in Praia da Luz, Algarve.

The man, who has since been released by police, may have requested suspect status for the legal rights it gives.

Officers searched the villa 150 yards from where four-year-old Madeleine of Rothley, Leicestershire, was last seen, and questioned three people.

Under the Portuguese legal system, arrests can only be made when police designate someone as an "arguido" or suspect, although no-one has been arrested yet in this case.

ARGUIDO STATUS
Officially a suspect
Bestowed by police or requested by individual
Right to remain silent
Right to a lawyer
Must report to police every five days

A person may also ask for the arguido process to be invoked as it gives them specific protection such as access to a lawyer and the right to remain silent.

BBC correspondent Richard Bilton said a British man in his 30s has been given arguido status.

It is understood the other people questioned were a German woman and a Portuguese man.

An Italian man has been arrested in Spain over the kidnapping of Madeleine McCann, according to newspaper reports.

Spain's El Pais says the man was arrested in Algeciras, southern Spain - a few hours drive from the Portuguese resort where Madeleine disappeared.

A spokesperson for the Spanish National Police says that, at this stage, they cannot confirm the information.

Madeleine was taken from her apartment as she slept in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz on 3 May.

Cautious

The Spanish interior ministry told the AFP news agency that the man was arrested after Italian authorities issued an international arrest warrant for him.

"Police are examining the possibility of a link" with the Madeleine case, the spokesman told AFP.

El Pais said the national police had arrested an Italian man at a property in Cadiz province who they suspected could be linked to Madeleine's disappearance.

The newspaper's website said the operation started at about 0500 in a town near Algeciras in Cadiz province.

Officers from the specialist and violent crimes unit searched a property for several hours, according to a local resident.

But the police were being cautious and refusing to give details about the man arrested, said the website.

'Hopes dashed'

A spokeswoman for the McCanns said the family were not commenting directly on the potential development.

"They will be looking to the Portuguese police to advise them on any developments.

"They treat everything fairly and they look to the Portuguese as to what is given more weight and what is given less weight," said the spokeswoman.

Madeleine's great uncle, Brian Kennedy, had not heard about the potential development in the investigation until he was contacted by the media.

He said the family was trying not to get its hopes up too much because they had so frequently been dashed.

The McCanns went to Spain last month to ask for assistance to help find Madeleine.

They think it is one of the places she might have been taken because of its proximity to Portugal.

Border controls were not put on alert for the first 12 hours of Madeleine's disappearance.
