If you want to read something gritty and fairly realistic, then George R. R. Martins "A Song of Ice and Fire" series might be just the thing. It's a fantasy world based loosely on the 100 year war of England, I believe. It's knights and swords fantasy, with just a smidgen of magic.

Be warned though, there are some adult themes, including a few rape scenes. The men in this book are not all good, and the good guys do NOT always win.

Ok, so I read the sample chapters, and I think it sounds good. I'll hae to go shopping on eBay later to see if I can find it.
