This a bit of a SPOILER
Now, it's actually been a long time since I read this series, but it's still my second favorite fantasy story. It's about a stable boy named Rap who grew up in the servants' quarters of the palace in a small kingdom. So small, in fact, that the Princess Inos was one of his playmates. When she is kidnapped, Rap must travel around the world, gaining allies and magical abilities as he goes, to find her and save her - and her kingdom.
I also found the magical system of this world simple but interesting. It was based on the number of magic words - which were actually the names of demons - that a person knew. The person didn't use the words, they simply knew them, and gained power from having them. One word made a genuis, two an adept, three a mage, and four a sorceror/sorceress. Five words . . . well, I don't want to spoil it that much.

Hmm. I'll run a search on Amazon, although for some reason I think they might not be there ...
Boy, was I wrong! There are no pictures, but Amazon does have the whole set for sale here.
For the individual books, I only found Perilous Seas and Emperor and Clown, unfortunately.
